I still can't get over that Bungie told us they were "Vaulting" content only to so thoroughly delete it they can't even load it into a dev environment to deal with a lawsuit.

Bungie has been a terribly run developer since even the days of OG Marathon, but have been able to get away with it for decades. It has all finally caught up to them and I do think it is a bit poetic that their new take on Marathon could be what ultimately destroys them.
If I understand correctly, they've been taken to court. They want to show their prior work as evidence they didn't copy work, just came up with a similar idea through developing their own story, but they can't find a way to show any of the vaulted content in a manner acceptable to the court.
The way it sounded on the last podcast the conclusion I drew was that I’m ready to believe the entire purpose of the Vaulting was to remove material and assets that might be compromised by plagiarism accusations under scrutiny
Deserved. I bought expansion packs, DELUXE versions of expansion packs, as they've come out in anticipation of playing through the entire game, and they took they away with zero refund before I could even touch them.
Funny thing is - i can belive that the plan at first WAS to vault it, but then the person responsible for that shit could have been easily fired and as we all know organisation in those companies ALWAYS sucks ass so the content is just lost forever i guess
Didnt it turn out that was horseshit and it was just because activision via teams like Vicarious Visions produced most of that work and they didnt have sole ownership over it?
I have a clan mate in D2 who is adamant that the content vaulting is completely fine cause no one was going back and playing it and that the fomo is what makes the game special and I want to punch her every time she talks about it
The lawsuit is specifically about the story being copied, right? So you'd think they'd at least have some development documentation or scripts or something regarding that on a server somewhere they could dredge up. They must have deleted EVERYTHING.
At this point I hope Bungie just sells the rights to Destiny away like they did with Halo. They clearly can't do anything right with it. The Destiny world is fun enough that it deserves better.
i really liked destiny 2, but i walked away from it when they started the vault nonsense, and it seems to have been the right call. these days even my gaming rig runs linux, which they refuse to turn on support for in their anti cheat, so fuck'em.
The did vault it, in the sense they put it into one of the Fallout vaults where everyone turns into a bug monster then dies and the whole place catches on fire
I've always heard that the old stuff was so old, it just wasn't compatible with the new engine changes and lighting and whatever. The Whisper DID come back so clearly not everything was deleted. Did new info come out or something?
How much you wanna bet that the same mentality that brought about vaulting (director referencing Ahn Quiraj from WoW iirc) also led to the decision to delete everything "So that we, the devs, can never be tempted to bring this back - preserving this experience."
Random YouTube videos are not preservation or physical media, nor are they an unaltered representation of the media in question, so yes, unacceptable in a court room.
I used the think I'd be cool to get a post-Destiny complete edition, to get to play through the full story and do the raids (the raids are really cool, but they aren't worth the bad parts imo) but I guess that's not even a pipe dream at this point lol
I played 1 and started 2, but yeah the FOMO and having to try and keep up with metas to stay competitive was just too much, started to feel more like work. It's a shame because I really enjoyed figuring out raids with friends. Remnant 1&2 is a nice alternative for the most part.
Yeah I only played Destiny 2 because I heard about the vaulting and wanted to try the Red War campaign; put about 20 hours in the game total but the new player onboarding experience is just awful.
It's basically non existent now. There was some freeplay something a while back I tried out because friends still want me to come back to it, I was so lost and confused about new leveling stuff, no idea where to go or what was going on, what I was allowed to access as a "free" player.
