Many years ago, a friend of my mother's who worked as a legislative analyst got gassed accidentally on the Capitol steps when they were trying to disperse protesters. He eventually developed pulmonary fibrosis and died from it... basically suffocated to death. Why can they still use this stuff?

Every soldier in the US Army (not sure about Navy, Air Force and Marines, I wasn’t in those services) had to do chemical protective gear confidence training. You don your gas mask and go into a tent or room filled with CS gas hang out for a bit, breathing easy with your mask on. 1/3

They make you take your mask off and take a deep breath. You then flee the room choking and gasping, snot pouring from your nose and your eyes on fire (and training cadre screaming at you not to touch your eyes). That’s been standard USA training for at least 40 years, if not longer. 2/3

Millions of people have taken that deep breath. The cs gas concentration in those rooms is far greater than what protestors are exposed to in crowd dispersal. Seems like there would be greater incidence of respiratory illness in members of the military if the premise of this claim were true. /

Tear gas is prohibited by the Geneva Convention from 1925, as it's considered a chemical weapon. Surprisingly, we still allow our police forces to use it.
