how can you announce the nazi party getting 150 seats on the bundestag as “GOOD NEWS.” like some people actually live here and are affected by this come on
no one was expecting them to win on their own. german governments have always been coalitions. the cdu has previously worked with them despite claiming they wouldn’t. i am scared as fuck
If the FDP stays below 5%, which is the case as of 19:36 (our time), the AfD has no shot at government even if the CDU lied about their refusal to work with them.
Also fuck the FDP anyway. But that would be great, because a shitty CDU+SPD+FDP coalition would've probably been likely.
Don’t know enough about German politics but from a generalized outsider perspective it looks like 49% of the vote vent to conservatives+nazis (30%+19%) so I would assume both are gonna be in power in a coalition along with some small/fringe party to push them over the 50% to form a government
Let's see the coalition before celebration. I still cannot see the SPD/CDU working together, a CDU/AFD is still possible, there are several examples such as the Dutch and Swedish governments being held up by the far right
The AfD was never close to winning - I think the big applause belongs to France who did not put Le Pen into power a short while ago. That was a tighter race.
But Italy has a fascist leader and there are some Putin-minions in Europe.
Fortunately they are not the European powerhouses economically.
I think now that things are coming to a head in Europe, thanks to the betrayal by Trump, those states, since they are in the minority with their pro Trump/pro Putin stance, will have a harder time to get away with that shit.
Idk about this. Being 2nd place as a Nazi-party isnt really loosing either. We didnt prevent them on becoming the leading party, we only postponed it im afraid :(
Nope they came in second to the party whose likely new chancellor wants to use AFD votes to get "conservative principles" reinstalled to fix migration.
yay!
(Sarcasm everyone. Sarcasm. it's not the worst outcome but it's damn close.)
Technically “not yet”. I really hope our conservative party doesn’t become weak when coalition talks become difficult. The so called “Brandmauer” (the clear message not to partner with the Afd) was already weakened once a few weeks back and again yesterday during a speech of candidate Merz 😬
Sorry, but to win the election was always unlikely for them.
They came in second with 20%, doubling their previous result. And that’s no good news at all.
Also, cdu may still form a coalition with them. So a fascist party in government is totally not off the table.
Also, cdu ain’t much better.
Sweden similar, right wing got 20% last election but has not managed to progress from there. Hope this is peak stupidity for Ger too. Good it wasnt worse, thanks young people in Germany!
As people get integrated this movement might subsidie from what Ive seen.
hi i recommend learning more about the bundestag and governing coalitions in germany. it’s unfortunately not as simple as they didn’t win the most seats /:
Genuinely curious. I find it hard to believe social constructs alone eradicated Nazism in Germany. The human race is a simple-minded species. So it begs the question, where did it all go? Were they all tried and killed? Moved to America?
It’s a multi party system here as in most European countries. The conservatives could still decide for a coalition with the AfD. It’s a huge win for the AfD even if the CDU does not partner with them just by looking at the number of seats they gained.
The votes aren’t in yet, but assuming the exit poll is true:
- The AFD has doubled its vote share
- The SPD fell to third
- The CDU/CSU win but failed to win a majority
You're right, but if history is any indication the CDU will form a coalition with them to try and keep the left coalition (SPD, GRÜNE, Die Linke) out of power.
You'll hear all the clamor about AFD getting second. The way German governance works and who won and who is leading now makes it possible the afd has no power in governing there. It takes months and sometimes longer to form the new government. The coalition gov does not need afd to rule.
I think these worries are unfounded. Merz may be impossibly vain and stupid, but he hates the AfD and he is not a fascist. And he does not need the AfD.
Actually, since the actions of Trump force Europe to forge stronger internal ties, this might hurt the anti-EU party AfD in the long run.
Great news today, but Afd will probably take some parlimentary seats. Not good for Germany, not good for the world. Nazi’s alive and well and living in Germany.
They were never close to win. But CSU is not much better nowadays. And, I am really ashamed to say this as a german: in 2025, the Nazis are in second place. 🤬
How is it good news, when 1 in 5 people voted for them according to exit polls. That is shit news. This is a clear surge in far right, giving them power beyond belief.
Good news would be that they were in last place with 1% or less. Merz will do a deal with them because he is a weak fascist himself
I can't accept that. In the UK, Liebour won a huge majority and the far right won far less than 20% but that hasn't stopped a so called "left" party from adopting their policies. Merz has already shown himself not to be trusted. Minorities like me are screwed.
No country has more laws and policies in place to curtail the far right than Germany, by a wide margin. Germany is a country of high self-awareness. What's happening in Italy is scarier. They each have a very unique history with fascism.
Yes, but the democratic parties have enough seats to form a coalition without the need to include the AfD.
The AfD is at 20%, which is horrendous. But the democratic parties no doubt noticed the bid demonstrations in the last weeks and know better than to woo the AfD.
That depends entirely on whether or not CDU cares more about democracy than they do about culture war. They could just as easily form an alliance with AfD and it wouldn't be surprising.
The culture war argument was more of a vehicle to gain the votes from uneducated simpletons.
They are keen on power, but they are also strongly pro EU and Ukraine - and the AfD wants the Dexit and is Putin's puppet. That alone is reason enough not to touch that party with a 10foot pole.
The CDU (and especially their Bavarian branch) would hate to have to form a coalition with the Greens (though that would be good for the climate), but a cooperation with the AfD is something they all vehemently deny. (And the elections are over, they won't have to lie anymore...)
Merz is stupid, but everyone in that party knows what their voters (and people who fund them) want - and they do not want the AfD stain on them. They want a strong economy, strong ties with the European allies and no concessions to Putin.
Yeah, I saw... sadly, I'm not too surprised. The hope is now that the other parties still keep them at bay and make no move to work with them. Also, die Linke got some seats! That's nice.

Nazism is clearly not going away and will result in violence.

Germany still has to fight this thing.
Is AfD also back-channel funded by Putin?
America is the threat from within
America has not just betrayed Ukraine it has changed sides
America has abandoned universal human values and replaced them with Russian Murder Lies and Tyranny.
America with Russia will become the destroyer of worlds and cursed forever
Im gonna start using thank fuck a lot more. Thank you
A lot better. If the system functions only on money and fear. Change the politicians to save the system.
- The AFD has doubled its vote share

The AFDs done amazing lol
Viva La Merica
I'm still very pessimistic, especially with seeing how stuff is turning out as well in the US.
Actually, since the actions of Trump force Europe to forge stronger internal ties, this might hurt the anti-EU party AfD in the long run.

Some Germans blame the rise in the far right on the reunification of the country...
Merz will keep his distance from the AfD and he has enough democratic potential partners to achieve a stable government.
The AfD will stay relegated to be opposition, for now.
The far right everywhere is getting too big for its boots but their opposition is too disjointed to do anything coherent about it.
Us non-fascists have to get a grip...
Democratic parties have got to get their shit together and make people's lives actually better.

I have listened to it since I was a kid (70s) and got it on shortwave.
