I know this sounds like pedantic scolding but I really do believe that doubling down on the idea that criminal records are a meaningful distinction is like carefully digging a pit that we can be shoved into.

Criminal justice reform is an issue of emphasis for @lwvc.bsky.social (as is climate change). I volunteered to do public education & advocacy about CC, but I learned about the current criminal justice situation from other Leaguers. 😱😭

Also reminds me how often the phrase "known to the police" is used in reporting about victims of homicide especially when they are young and Black. In the work I've done with families, it almost always meant victim or witness, yet reported without context. Not at all to counter your important point.

I think it is meaningful, however, because of the lying about it. Every time the WH Press Secy insists they're all convicted criminals, *she* is acknowledging that it matters, at least for PR. And since it's obviously untrue, it's going to trip them up.
