Bluesky can talk all it wants about being the replacement for all social media on the Internet, but until they make their image compression less goddamn hideous I remain ready to abandon ship at a moments’ notice

i have been sporadically trying to find a place where i can keep my photography that doesn't eat the picture quality for dinner, and it feels so demoralizing to see 8 year old reddit threads recommending sites that don't exist anymore
One of the only subscriptions I actually pay for outside of a handful of news sites is Flickr, because I use it as a gallery of my full res work, but it has no social media functionality at all lol
Thinking of the native photos here as thumbnails and including Flickr links could work. Not everyone will click through. Those that do, won't every time. But when they do, they will probably explore your Flickr a bit before returning.
Insta too, to a degree. I know im not as good a photographer as a *lot* of people (and I do follow a lot of pros which doesn't help) but I'd love to know how some people make their Insta shots look so sharp, mine are almost always a fuzzy mess.
Yikes. I dunno what settings I use but my ads are usually pretty innocuous (the most frequent ones I see are for those little rip-off Lego dioramas of Japanese streets and stuff).
Ugh, that really sucks, terrible you have to get bombarded with that shit. Frustrating knowing some of these platforms were *perfectly fine* years and years ago and they've just steadily got worse.
I know this is supposed to be a friendly joke but I genuinely don’t know if I can handle the idea of losing my sight yet, it is one of the few things about this body that has actually done something besides hurt me
The lack of HDR support honestly ruins so much of my stuff. I want to move somewhere else but it just feels like I'm either compromising ethics other quality of my work🥲🥲
Where the highlights are higher than an SDR color space on a display so I bumps the peak brightness up in those areas. When I post here vs looking on HDR displays the highlights are muddy and smooshed 😔
Hard agree, Having worked in the world of online photo storage, the tradeoffs made for storage and bandwidth costs all suck. Maybe there’s a way to embed photos from outside paid sources like Flickr?
Oh gosh I'm assuming Flickr doesn't really put much energy into the sharing feature. The popup says "share 1 photo" but it shares the entire photostream!
Wondering if there's a way to make it work for a single photo.
Okay so Flickr gives a 120kb image, but bsky just stores its own copy, which fits within the 1MB bsky size, but bsky does also generate a 63kb thumbnail which looks okay.
Now I'm fully nerd-sniped in figuring out how to post higher resolution photos :P
I stuck with twitter WAY longer than I should have, largely because my pictures actually looked worth a damn on there. I’m half out the door at this place because my medium format Velvia shots look worse than cell phone pictures if you look too close
There's a lot about both this and mastodon that have me eyeing the exits. These are basically my last two attempts, and then I'm just going back to blogging only.
Honestly the *only* site I have actually enjoyed using in the past long while was Cohost, and despite pitching in, it couldn’t make it, so I assume the Good Internet is over. I just wish I didn’t want to share my pics so bad lol
hmm well I do keep my Flickr very active and updated. but I don’t think that it actually shows the image previews for whatever weird reason https://flic.kr/p/2r5mkMQ
I usually scale my pics to 1080p vertical and they actually seem to look better. I think with small images it doesn't bother to compress them, it will let me paste them in vs uploading. I'm just speculating, though.
In addition to better image compression I also would like a cross platform drafts option where I can queue photos like a slide projector. Though basically I want cohost back
I wouldn’t go that far, but the moment somebody makes cohost2 or just a better tumblr I’m jumping ship. Because this place is not inspiring me to do more photography
I am hoping if I build up enough of a catalog, someday someone will really appreciate it, and save it from a landfill lol. I don’t really know what else I’m shooting for at this point

Of course, that's more work to do.
For people who have the app, it's a pretty good experience. But you can't count on that.

These should look noticeably different than sdr photos, if you have a recent ish phone it should display them right (or a fancy monitor).

I'd just do a website but I don't have the spoons.
flickr is still around. upload them there and link here maybe?
