I'm sure it's an amazing experience, with lots of unique culture, but I do wonder how much of the impact is because it's a visitor's first time in a dense megalopolis where they walk and ride trains everywhere.

Yeah. It's like a confluence of: being immersed in a foreign place, proximity to culture (pop and historical) that interests, experiencing old cities with built up transit systems and high density, and meeting internet friends. Not the only place in the world for each, but all at once is high impact
