France seemed to be unlucky defensively last year which hurt his WAR; I don’t believe he’s the worst defensive player in baseball.

But he hit so poorly the Mariners released him with no good option and he was worse with the Reds. Suspect he’ll get cut by the all-star break.

Most of the projection systems think he’s going to rebound. That aside, 1B has turned into an awful position in terms of production. Freeman, Harper and Vlad were the only 3 to exceed 3 fWAR las year. Twins ability to contend comes down to Correa/Buxton/Lewis staying healthy and producing.

Projection systems aren't going to catch on to a 30-year-old suddenly losing all of his productive value. They're based on historical trends for similar players.

You cut that list off at an odd place - Walker and Santana are at 3.0 fWAR, Nat Lowe at 2.8. All three were available this winter.

I’m not necessarily defending what they did here, or claiming that there weren’t more talented players available, but let’s not pretend teams live and die with 1B production. The Brewers won their division with negative WAR production at first. The cutoff was pointing out the lack elite production.

you're cherrypicking. The point is that this is an easy position to fill with even adequate production, and the Twins chose not to do so in an offseason where they also didn't do a whole lot else.

My argument is that you’re over inflating the importance of the position. First base is a terrible investment, and I think most teams would agree, given how they are filling the position and avoiding long term contracts to the Pete Alonso’s of the world. There’s better ways for the Twins to improve.

I’m not over inflating anything. They’re accepting ~ replacement level production at a relatively easy position to fill. They even passed over better internal options. And they didn’t put any money not spent there into other areas of need.
