My fav Captain Planet episode is the one set in Northern Ireland during the height of the Troubles.
It has it all:
- Sectarian violence is likened to high school bullying
- zero political examination of the systemic oppression
- The IRA seemingly have a nuke attached to a watch-based detonator
Holy shit! I have no recollection of this. How did that get made?! I have so many questions. Was Captain Planet produced in Canada? Who were the writers that thought this was in any way appropriate? Stunned.
My understanding of it is that a lot of key-frame animation was done in Dublin back in the day (two of my aunties worked on the original The Land Before Time, and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles were animated here - they've a dodgy episode set in Dublin as well!).
Oh can I interest you in their Israel v Palestine episode?
I mean credit to Captain Planet - they sure were ballsy, even if they hadn't a hope of covering any of these nuanced conflicts in any degree of detail.
Oh naturally we all had red hair in it, of course.
I'm mis-remembering slightly - it transpired the episode involved a Loyalist faction being given similar control of a nuke(!) hence the name of the episode - "it must be Doomsday if it's Belfast".
Captain Planet is the GOAT! I am sad that I can't find it anywhere so I can rewatch it and see how accurate the portrayal of rich villains are now that I am older.

Less protests, more breaking equipment.

On a serious note - there was a brief moment where Hitler defeats Captain Planet:
