slight tangent, do the xG models account for player finishing skill? It's a pretty obvious example of heirarchical data, shots by Haaland are more likely to go in than shots by Neto, for example. A random effect for player would give a good indication of finishing skill.

indeed that gives an indication of a players finishing skill in isolation. But in the match comparison it would useful to know how good teams are at getting their best finishers good shots. Current xG is just the average. Wouldn't it be better if shots Haaland gets in the box were asigned higher xG?

the point being that bad players getting good shots might skew the interpretation of who is winning the game. If your tactics get you fewer shots but they're taken by your best finisher, that is probably a better tactic.

That would require you to have good confidence about who the good finishers are, which takes hundreds and hundreds of shots by that player alone, and the error bars are still very large.
