one of my favorite Wold Newton articles posited that Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble were in fact:

1) real actual cavemen
2) made immortal by the same meteor as Vandal Savage and Immortal Man
3) also every Laurel and Hardy, Abbot and Costello, etc characters
