I just watched this vietnam vet talk about how he saw 4 armed combatants in a year but 75 of his buddies were killed every month by snipers and mines

they would go into the village and burn it down and make/produce viet cong with their actions cuz they had no idea who was the enemy

Depends on what your war goals are. Wipe out a bunch of people and infrastructure? Military conflict is fantastic at that. Conquer lands and reform government? Uhhh.. no. That's always going to be a long process and military might just builds resistance.
