I ask because I have a dog who hates them, but I also recall as a kid loving firework displays and (I may be wrong) don't recall dog owners being as upset in those times.

Haven’t they just got more “disorganised” you used to have the planned displays but not people setting them off themselves. So a few minutes show which is fine but going off for days on end every evening, most of the evening from Diwali to Nov 5th
And to answer your original question, yes I think fireworks are more sophisticated these days so probably louder and used by people with less scruples about when and where they use them?
I think it’s harder to judge how upset people were years ago as (for me at least) there was no internet. Any upsets you may of heard of would have been word of mouth? I remember Blue Peter always warning to keep pets indoors though.
We were living in mokpo (S Korea) last year. They had a firework display every Saturday. Initially dog hated it, after 4 months she would just sit on the couch watching it
Some are definitely louder. But whether they're loud because the explosion is loud, or because there's less trees, grass and other acoustic dampers in residential areas these days, they echo more and seem louder, I don't know. I do know it can be awful round my way.
I think the size/noise factor, fireworks available for domestic purchase now are a world away from 20/30 years ago. The "acceptability" of letting them off at events on a wider time horizon than just bonfire night. London with a baby was unberable for about a month.

1970s home fireworks were a lot quieter. Fizzzzzz… crack, not the FWOOOOOSSSH… BLAAM!! of contemporary versions.
Personally, I love fireworks and buying them these days is very difficult
Used to be able to get them in supermarkets but no longer
I understand they're not for all
