This is how communities are built. Respectful engagement from either side of the fence needs to be welcome, but online trolls and needless antagonism should be disengaged and blocked at the first sign. You will never get through to these people, just move on.
Good article. Lately I've found myself typing up a mean reply to a nazi troll only to back out and hit the block button. It's easier and I don't have to worry about being associated with the trolls and included in a blocklist.
Yeah, when I first joined here about a year ago I would routinely type a response to asshole posts or trolls, stare at that message without hitting "reply" then just hit cancel and block instead.
It took months of behavioral training but now it's instinct.
This makes more sense now. Didnβt realise that blocking had these effects here. I have tended to just ignore trolls rather than block because that worked best on the βother place.β
