The other thing about Colombian coffee is, there’s a global coffee shortage right now so it’s not like the Colombian growers are going to have a hard time finding buyers.

It Colombia stops exporting coffee beans to the USA, that means that there is more coffee for the rest of us. I bought a 400g bag of Colombian coffee beans this week. Excellent quality. ☕
We already get high-end single estate Colombian coffees here. They're expensive but they're also incredibly good. I don't know if this will really affect the bulk coffee market in a huge way?
Might have affected a bit if Americans stopped buying as much coffee because of the higher prices. (I think Colombia produces a major part of USA coffee) But if they're like coffeeholics anywhere else I can't see that happening. 🙂
Bit academic since I see the tariffs have already been cancelled. Could we ask Trump et al. to throw another tantrum without backing down so fast? And preferably add Costa Rica, so we really get prices down in Finland?🤔
Coffee is my one luxury in life that I pay more for than what someone in my income bracket should. And I like these type of small roasteries since they at least claim to work directly with the growers so more money flows their way than in big coffee business. I think that's only fair.
Right? The rest of the world would only have to decide to buy more Colombian coffee just to stick a finger up at Trump. Aussies, Brits, Europeans, drink more Colombian coffee and do your part to resist.
This study appears to not account for serving size:
"This could be due to varying preferences and consumption patterns in these countries, such as the preference for larger single servings of coffee in the U.S. compared to smaller, more frequent servings in Europe."
Even if they didn't have other buyers, they'd just do the ol' middleman routine. Sell to a nation that isn't embargoed or under tariffs, that country sells to the US at an upcharge and makes pure profit. The US consumer loses either way.
It's over. As expected Columbia caved and accepted all current and future flights. Columbia exports more than just coffee! All possible sanctions have been removed unless they don't uphold their end of the bargain.
I, for one, will not pay more for coffee just to help scrump play his tariff games. I like tea as well; when tea is taxed by his tariff, i will find something else. So lovely to not be addicted to specific things. Water is nice, and is locally sourced. Coffee growers, go ahead and sell elsewhere.
I'm a coffee drinker, but I hope Colombia hangs tough. And all of the other countries. If they don't stick together, and start caving one by one to Trump, he will only get worse.
Would it be feasible for someone to import the beans in Canada and then
Import them
From Canada to the US? Or it would be roughly equivalent in terms of paid tariffs?
Trump raged all CAPS, his face turned red,
"Won’t take flights? Slap tariffs instead!"
But financial minds all strongly agree,
It's Americans who will pay the fee.
Oh, I'm sure we'll buy it anyway even at 50% more and complain bitterly as we drink it. 😀 I remember my parents switching to tea during another manufactured coffee shortage back in the late 20th century.
Bishop Budde has been facing death threats since she asked Trump to show mercy to people fearing for their lives. Now even the President is painting her as the enemy and we can’t abandon her. Let’s show Bishop Budde she has massive support all around the world!
Right. Once about a time maybe the US market was 'the market' so such move was huge. Now, thanks to all globalization the rich in the US have foster other counties are great at selling to a number of markets.
Whatever. Pretty sure everyone is going to be able to raise their prices if Colombian becomes very expensive and in short supply here. Isn't that how markets work?
probably, but Colombian coffee is for the mass market, and is low quality. I doubt Folgers and Maxwell house will start buying high quality coffee from Ethiopia, Java, and Papua New Guinea enough to affect the price of good coffee, but who knows?
You could be right. I guess we will see what happens next. I assume Trump will declare victory since apparently the deportees are being returned, just not on military planes.
Nope, we're not letting THAT happen. What with the US leaving the WHO, anyone travelling from the US should be held in quarantine for 2 weeks. Makes cross-border shopping impractical.
The best thing of all is... EVERYWHERE BUT THE US will probably have Columbia trying to sell them coffee... prices for other countries may actually DROP outside the US!
Exactly the absurdity that you think you could land in a foreign country with military aircraft on a whim is unfathomable. He said if you’re going to treat Colombians like criminals I will send my personal plane to get them. Seems like a something a leader would do.
A big thanks to Trump from Europe. Him limiting trade between the US and Colombia will increase global supply, lowering our prices for coffee in Europe.
This is true with Canadian natural resources as well. There'll be an adjustment in trade routes, but China is already trying to buy what Canada's selling.
As a lifelong coffee lover- this is on target. Climate Change firmly entrenched in downgrading coffee industry. Don’t know if hardier strains will save growers- but prices will continue to creep up unless Trump shenanigans cause huge jumps instead
Again, a global market for it. Any country that wants to stick a finger up at Trump should buy a few more tankers of it from Columbia. The enemy of my enemy is my friend.
If Trump starts tariff wars with a few more countries America is going to become isolated. The rest of the world will find different trade partners and the US will suffer. It’s what Trump wants.
Yes! This needs to happen anyway, this imbalance makes the people of the United States arrogant, isolationist and lazy. Splash of ice water seems like just the ticket.

... you guessed it...
Coffee
... China
Time to fix that.
They had all of the leverage.
Brazil, Africa and Asia are much larger global suppliers.
(have been for decades)
Fixed.

I use an electric perculator.

Do we think it's sunk in that we're a declining empire yet? If Trump keeps fucking around they're going to find out sooner than later.
Trump is bad at this whole trade war business 😂
The top three coffee producing countries in the world are Brazil, Vietnam, and Colombia.
