anecdotally speaking as someone who lived 29 years in a 90+ percent white christian small city, religion is just a tool, one of the clubs or handshakes for the good ol boy club. richard hofstadter's anti-intellectualism in american life (1963) has a still-relevant analysis, i think.

The Bible is also so inconsistent it can be used to try to justify just about anything; and also doesn’t really have that much to do with most Christian religions, especially in US. Lots of stuff comes from places other than the Bible.
