I think the number 1 rule of riding a road bike fast is to give pedestrians the right of way. But if you live in a huge city and there are only a few places cyclists can ride and there are points of friction between riders and park users, this primarily is a policy and infrastructure failure. - ThreadSky

Yeah, it’s a sidewalk not a sidebike. I’ve been nearly seriously injured several times by bikers riding on sidewalks. It was their failure, not the infrastructure’s.

If someone is riding on the sidewalk, it’s because of a lack of safe infrastructure. It’s a symptom, not the problem.

It is both. If there are insufficient lanes for cars, it’s not a reason to drive on them on the sidewalk. And if someone did, no one would say “that’s a symptom not the problem.”

We're having this debate about the outer circle of Regent's Park in London.
It's a park and recreational (fast) road cycling should be encouraged, but as you say pedestrians do need to get priority.
BTW, It's the through traffic that needs banning.

I was lucky enough to visit London last fall and got to ride a free crappy hotel loaner bike through Richmond Park. AWESOME place to ride, but the through traffic was bonkers. Backed up for a solid mile exiting the park as I flew by on the hotel bike in the bike lane! 😎

If you ride a road bike fast enough to put pedestrians at risk (which I do) ride it on the (gasp) road. Which I also do. Problem solved. If you want to share a path ride slow.

OK, but the original post is referring to discourse about Prospect (and Central) Park in NYC where there are multi-lane roads circling the parks.
