chinese evs are cheap but i think we also have to remember even ICE/hybrid cars aren’t always a 1 to 1 with their european or american counterparts. A Corolla hybrid sedan is only like 16-17k USD in china. It is 24k here in the USA. - ThreadSky

Imagine it's a bit of all the above. Locally built, very high demand, all of the cheapest/best battery mfg is local, highly commoditized hybrid powertrains, and a bit of gov incentives /subsidization on top.

I think it's one of the biggest things missed when having the Chinese EV price/incentive convo. Like a Ford Fusion starts at $21k, so the normalish BYD Han L PHEV at $29k is relatively pricy, and the insane 1086hp EV AWD version at $38k feels like Hellcat pricing, not cheap.
