yes! americans engage with national politics like it is sports or a soap opera because the literal distance generates a certain amount of abstraction and, well, ironic distance. it does not help either that the former president was literally a reality tv star

We here are not innocent of it here, but this is a direct function of not really thinking national politics is real. Americans treat it like a reality show and narrative, but not as something with stakes in our daily communities

Notice the democrats surge when they did something not boring.
The second huge problem is that many, many voters do not understand the system is supposed to work, i.e. branches, state, fed local.
Politics as sports has been around for a long, long time & won't ever go away for some people.
