after years of hearing conservatives describe basic political equality as "mob rule," i am darkly amused that this country is being subjected to literal mob rule by deranged reactionaries

I keep seeing people like "they can't do that!" because they don't understand laws are only as good as the people charged with upholding them with integrity and I'm like, well at least it will be funny to watch these yahoos piece this together in real time.
The magas are totally reactionaries. Now they own the federal government and all their fuck ups will be on them! Maybe by this time next year, magadom will be on its way out. In 10 years time, I predict one will be hard pressed to find 1 maga remaining.
Repeatedly since the election, whenever I pause to think about what 2017-2020 were like, and compare that to how I feel now, I’ve had the thought: I’m not ready. Even the very pessimistic people are not ready, are going to be shocked to return to that world
Yes, “fun”. 😮💨
What’ll be especially fun is seeing how they cobble something together with no help from Ds. I’m not at all sure they’ll be able to pass anything for weeks. And their majority in the House will be even smaller. It’s going to be chaos and it will cost us billions.
People have no clue what's coming. There are thousands of clues, but they prefer to ignore it. For the next four years everything the government says will be lies, and they'll be trying to kill us in ten different ways. Hunker down. The wary have the best chance of surviving.
I think this is part of the big question, which is to what extent the natural dysfunction of MAGA will keep them from accomplishing much. They can plan all they want to, appoint all the yes men they want to, but at the end of the day it comes down to discipline and execution.
This is the point I made to my 20 yo shortly after Election Day, as this was the year, her 1st presidential election, that she truly became immersed in this, and I want her to know hope.
On top of that, even if a guy like Vought has that (which he seems to) he’s still overseen by an erratic and impulsive person who can undo his best efforts with a single public utterance.
I have no doubt they will be able to inflict pain, but it won’t be a tenth of what they threaten to do.
I have almost no fear of awful legislation coming out of Congress except for another predictable round of marginal tax cuts for the rich. But we've seen that since 1981. My fear is what Trump can do unilaterally with simple executive power. That is why tariffs and deportations are the real threats.
He can’t deport anyone anywhere unless he gets agreement from countries. He can’t put them in camps unless he builds them. And agribusiness will be lobbying hard against it.
Maybe I’m just an optimist, but I want to believe the glass is half full.
Well, maybe a quarter full.
That’s a good point. My response would be that the people he cares about, Wall Street, will fight him over tariffs and provide even more distraction and wasted energy. And deportations involve a ton of planning to execute. My guess is he’ll round up a handful of actual criminals and claim victory.
Must be nice to be independently wealthy and be able to see this as fun somehow. On good days I'm apprehensive and depressed about it, on bad days I'm terrified as I realize I'm not young and probably not prepared to endure a struggle where basic necessities like food and shelter are not available.
Holy shit, you're right. We're starting the year with no federal government, and that's probably going to be the 'calmest' that things get. That's messed up.
Just like last time, watch the chaos and blinding incompetence unfold while Scamalot Trumpistan is at the golf course. +Now with Scamalot Muskistan extra stupid sauce, lawsuits against newspapers, political show trials and fully compromised foreign assets working on behalf of Russian interests.
I'm really going to miss Biden's quiet, thoughtful approach to governing. Much underrated president. Too bad he was too old to campaign effectively. Too bad Harris had so little time to put together her campaign. I thought she was splendid. Sorry she couldn't pull it off.
The possibly good part is that Musk and Trump have decided to blow up Speaker Johnson, with no idea who else might be able to get 218 out of 219 GOP votes to take over as Speaker.
These guys make a lot of noise but have no plan.
the downside is that when they do shut down the government, which will be much harder on everybody who isn't a billionaire (or Trump) having no Speaker will make it take that much longer before they can even bother to pretend trying to get things funded again
Probably Johnson will pass something with a lot of Dem votes, but then he'll take the blame for it and that's why they'll be looking behind the couch cushions for a new Speaker next month and it has to be someone with no previous accomplishments to be held against them.
Oh but be careful, you must remember that the Speaker of the House is only required to be chosen by the members. It does not explicitly say the speaker must be a member of the House. Read Article 1, Section 2, Clause 5. These fuckers are crazy enough to try to have Elon “chosen” Speaker of the House
True, it can be anyone (well, I guess anyone with no position in the executive or judiciary or the senate). But whoever it is needs those 218 out of 219 GOP votes and they'll presumably get zero from Dems. The only names I can think of are Dolly Parton and Zombie Ronald Reagan (both too lefty tho)
maga = chaos + corruption + capitulation + greed
I mean, who would ever have thought putting the “move fast and break things” bros in charge of government would be a horrible idea…? 🙄
Surprising that it turns out that to the "it's a republic not a democracy" crowd it's only a republic if it comes from the herrenvolk democracy region.
i'm getting a bit of that watching Christians and Christian pastors react to MAGA Christians starting to call Jesus weak. like...they been headed this way for a while. but the "good conservatives" are the only ones surprised
The level of denial in American churches right now is pretty extreme. The only sector actively growing with any reliability are reactionary churches and they are mostly obtaining new members by stealing them from standard evangelicals.
It struck me during COVID lockdown, that the people who fantasize so much about hiding in their bunker and fighting off (woke) zombies with their AR-15s, were in fact behaving like a bunch of zombies themselves.
Hey Capos, footmen, Dons, can you come up with a plan, to make sure he (ORANGENA) never becomes a mafia personality. He would fuck up our cultural heritage.
they were always going to like it if it's lynch mob rule. One small silver lining to all this is it's pointed out all the hypocrisies at the core of modern "conservatism" and exposed it as just fascism-lite
The conservative media sphere has caused a hugely dangerous belief structure: every bad thing Republicans do is less bad than Democrats, because they've done far worse.
It's how they're able to rationalize and accept all the bad stuff they do.
It's also what makes piercing their bubble so hard.

Just like the difference in how the anti-mask mobs were treated compared to the George Floyd protests for justice.
Conservatives have considered themselves the victims of oppression at every step of the way, all the way back to (at least) Brown v. Board.

🤪
I say “very small amount” because most of these insufferable idiots don’t have a modicum of self-awareness.

fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck
These guys make a lot of noise but have no plan.
We can't disrupt people's shopping with all that "justice and democracy" stuff.
I mean, who would ever have thought putting the “move fast and break things” bros in charge of government would be a horrible idea…? 🙄
Well played
It is so obvious now that the claims are false and NOW, they have the very thing they were SOOOOOO scared of!
"The Federalist Society"?

It's all:
"What do you mean by..."
"Didn't you say..."
"How does that work based on these facts..."
"Where's the decency in..."
