The main insight is that us Brits are an irreverent and humour-loving people, who love to wind up those who take life, and particularly themselves, too seriously. This is taken by some to be anti-achievement, but it is not! We absolutely respect achievement—but coupled with humility.
To each their own! But FWIW there’s a decent chance you’ve had some awful mass-produced swill that isn’t representative. As with anywhere, the best stuff comes from microbreweries.
Any pub can serve decent beer—it’s less common to have a brewery actually attached, they often just source locally. But many chain pubs and bars don’t serve decent ale—if they only have 2-3 to choose from, that’s a bad sign. CAMRA have a directory to find decent ones: https://camra.org.uk/pubs/
I just imagined myself walking into a pub, offering to buy the boys a round, & setting cans of Budweiser in front of them. I'd have to call the consulate
"Look, it's hard to explain. One day, you'll be with your friends having a look in JD Sports, and you might want some curry at Wetherspoon's Curry Club, but your friend Calum who's an absolute legend and a truly funny person will say..."
JD Sports is a very common middle of the pack sporting goods chain in the UK. Wetherspoon's Curry Club is a fast food curry place, also a chain. Nando's is a piri piri grilled chicken place (and fucking delicious), also a chain.
