Maybe the big story isn’t “Texas midwife charged with alleged illegal abortions” but “Texas attacks and closes three clinics providing prenatal care for low income Spanish speakers.”

Texas Governor Ann Richards created the Texas Lottery so that the majority of funds would go to Public Schools. Of course, MAGA GOP had different ideas for those funds and took more and more each year from the children, teachers, and public schools. Now they want to privatize education for Money!
Well I didn't want to do a whole thread, but apparently folks think I'm being reductionist so I guess I'll spend time clarifying that tweet rather than work on the grant I need to finish to get money to run the clinic. Here we go:
"Midwife arrested" is a Texas press release. It is all allegations, and it is allegations that can neither be addressed or balanced in any way because the subject is not allowed to speak on their own behalf. So overall it is a vague, bullshit story meant to scare medical professionals and patients
The Texas hospital citizenship question and threats of deportation keep immig/undocumented pregnant folk from hospitals. As you say, next step was to close down the shadow healthcare system for immigrants. Final bonus--you have perfect scapegoats for your test case--ones both parties have demonized
Where are the points that could be looked at in the press release to know this is bullshit and PR? Accusations in it include "calling herself Dr. Maria" - meant to imply she's a fraud pretending to be a doctor. To cast doubt on her medical credentials. But you can have a doctorate of midwifery.
We have two midwives at our clinic. One is "Midwife Nancy" - a licensed professional midwife. The other is "Dr. Stephanie" - a CPM and Doctoral Certified Nurse Midwife. She also has prescriptive abilities like an obgyn and many nurse practitioners.
OBGyns in the south especially (and primarily white male old ones) continue to fight over midwives being seen as autonomous practitioners. I could go on about what is happening in AL but my recent favorite is the fight that midwives can't do births because DOCTORS HAVE TO ORDER a newborn screening.
Mind you, a midwife is trained prick a heel and make the card. And a doctor doesn't actually DO it in a hospital, someone else does. But apparently a doctor has to be the one to order it or it isn't valid. This is the bullshit gatekeeping doctors are doing on birth workers to keep them out.
It’s the literal reason we stayed open after Dobbs. And right now we are basically midwife run. This story has struck me inside in a way no other post Roe one has. :/

(Sorry but I think the binary/zero-sum logic of “maybe [your struggle] is not important” is unhelpful especially in these flood-the-zone times)
