It's friday! that means time for the weekly good news thread. Every time I do one of these, there's a mental jarring, against the backdrop of world events. But joy persists. What's brought light into your life this week? What's made you smile?

We had friends round on Saturday night.
Ros got back from an awesome mini-break.
On Tuesday, I hung out with old friends and saw the Crash Test Dummies in York.
My daughter continues to be awesome - and we're just off out to the pictures.
Well this week has been a complete shit show. But when a mum at my son's school heard my mum had fallen and that everything was chaos she offered to make me a pit of Bolognese and pick my son up. I barely know her. People are good.
Can I have a second. I forgot that anything existed before The Fall. I taught 75 kids to make cursed sock bunnies and they were hilarious (the kids and bunnies). One girl had even sewn me a pencil case as a thank you for the sessions I'd done at her school. 😍
I have finally finished disassembling, spray painting and readsembling all of the kitchen cabinets (including the retro 1950s one) turquoise and white (clean, sand, prime, clean, 3x spray, 2x laquer x10 doors, x6 drawers, and the big '50s cabinet)
Three things: 1. My kid is the most wonderful company. 2. I did an awesome all-women panel this week on AI & Literature that had exactly the right amount of panel (dis)agreement. 3. I am running an incredibly fun workshop today and am chairing an incredibly interesting AI & magic event tonight.
Submitted a couple of fantasy stories recently - have always loved fantasy, but haven't written it for a long time - and had the post-submission jitters, but got some really nice feedback on two of them already.
My mom and sister and I just started watching The Residence (first time through for my sister, rewatch for me and mom). It's good to share fun storytelling and a new favorite character.
The thing that made me smile this week was the kid who played Thor in my Hay event yesterday. He gave it everything and he was brilliant. @hayfestival.bsky.social
When the children's surgery center prepares the small one for surgery and they are not afraid. Kudos Seattle Children’s Bellevue Clinic and Surgery Center
My youngest has been away at residential with school and is coming home today! While I've enjoyed the respite from caring, I'm looking forward to seeing her.
It's been a pretty shoddy week, but I watched a livestream of The Spy Network, about the last hours of Mary, Queen of Scots, on Wednesday evening, and it was flipping brilliant!
I'm signed off with back pain and on max dose of tramadol just now 😵💫 but I got my first peonies of the year and they bring me joy 😊 reading this for genuine good news 😄
Joy is important! We need to be joyful because of how terrible things are, not to say I am happy while you suffer, but in service to others because joy creates joy and we need it
I have resized & labeled all the pics for the next book ready to send to the publishers. I dread doing it and tis done!
I had one of me staff members at work ask me to be a reference for them, she’s been so timid and I have worried that she’s not doing ok, but it seems like she’s going places.
My youngest, who's flown the nest and returned twice, at last has a permanent job. It's away on the mainland, which is what he's been wanting. He's off today to meet a potential landlord. I'm so hopeful this is it! He deserves it
I think I missed your last Friday post so please, I beg you indulgence for this amazing cake (it was my older child’s 18th birthday on the 12th of May and they are currently in the midst of A Levels)
Yesterday evening was the start of a circus filled weekend for our family with the start of the local circus school’s circus days. V proud of my daughter’s skills. Tonight both my girls will show off their unicycling & my partner his juggling.
I got to spend the last hour of work today with 5-6 yo students, giving them creative suggestions and helping them build domino towers, design lego cars and play creatively together. Being a part of kids sheer joy at creating, parallel and paired play was a lovely end to my week.
I am looking forward to seeing if I pitched it right to people who know the canon. It clearly works as a poem, but does it win at the References for Depth … :P
Not sure if it’s brought light but innocently posting something at 11pm the other night and waking up to thousands of notifications and having my tweet reported in news outlets around the world was certainly something!
I actually showed her the first Loki book as the proportion of illustrations to words
Although it's for an adult audience it's the illustrated journal of a woman who finds herself on the titular ward. (I didn't want to put the workload of an entire comic on the artist)
I got to spend last weekend with my oldest friend in York for the first time post-COVID. I’d forgotten how beautiful York is. Had fun exploring Criminally Good Books. Unfortunately my TBR is 7 books heavier now….
Such a mixed week (anyone reading this please see my profile pinned post and Louie’s earlier repost🙏🙏🙏) but also awesome for many reasons on the book front!

#AltText photo in quoted post shows around 50 people sitting and standing on Whitehall opposite Downing St, holding signs that say #FreeAlaa
