Because I neither like Microsoft nor where GitLab is currently moving.

And yes, very possible. Most of my clients host their own git.

I'm pretty clueless when it comes to self hosted solutions that aren't GitLab. How do your clients handle automations like CI/CD? Handle merge request reviews? I'm guessing there are effective replacements for that, or the projects don't require them?

Also curious about where GitLab is going wrong.

Yes, there are many other git services.

BitBucket is good, I've been using it for years for private repositories.

That makes sense, but it also severely complicates authentication. Dealing with sending emails and confirming accounts adds a lot of extra complexity.

So I'd rather just rely on other services to do that.

Maybe Auth Service from Supabase could be something to easily manage it?

The free tier is very generous and you have a lot of possibilities - and even the possitibility to completely self host.

I'm using better auth, which supports email auth, but issue is setting up rather complex UI to manage it all, dealing with sending verification emails, ability to change account data and so on.

Easier to let third party to deal with that and let user pick which provider to sign in with.
