The parents and kids don't read. The ones that can afford tutors, that is. Screens. They've destroyed curiosity. It's very sad. Ripe for swallowing lies. I honestly fear for their ability to live adult lives. The schools don't teach handwriting or require homework. Nobody plays outside. Sad.
As a Head Start Teacher's Aide many decades ago, one of the things I quickly noticed is that children with little reading support in the home tended to have very flat emotional affect. Providing books and encouraging parental interactions with kids and books - story time - provided a solid remedy.
