It's a holdover from when cars still had carburetors. Any car made within the last 40 years doesn't really need to be warmed up, or at least it'll be warmed up by the time you've pulled out of the parking spot

I don't get why people idle their engines either. If it's stuffy, just open the window!

* For the sake of accuracy, it's modern gasoline engines that don't need to warm up. Diesels can be a little more finicky

As a teen (70s) I was told most engine wear occurs when you start the car; took me 30 years to break the habit of idling when I'd only be stopped for a minute or two. New cars that stop the motor at every red light give me heartburn.
