Bang on. 3 stretches the NES' abilities but World was just better in every way. Audio, graphics, gameplay.
It's great that 3 exists and people get butthurt when people say World is the better game. They forget that doesn't mean 3 isn't good or stops existing magically because World is superior.
1. Super Mario Brothers 3, Mario Allstar Edition (by a large margin)
2. Super Mario World
3. New Super Mario Brothers (Nintendo DS) (If by 2D you mean gameplay on a 2D plane, not the literal graphics)
4. The Gameboy Color "Super Mario Brothers" version.
Honestly I’m so over the term best , it’s too subjective . My favorite will always be super Mario world, give me that classic music , yoshi , star world and the cape anyday
I want to say Super Mario Bros 3, because the surprise and joy is still there and I feel it does everything so well... but I also know it's a popular answer and I want to give more love to my personal fave...
I played it as a kid and loved it. Loved the music and unusual stages. Replayed it recently and it still holds up, but I was amazed it's only about 4 hours long.
3 is my favorite, Wonder is the most accessible for younger and new players, but NSMB U seems to have the best mix of features, fun, and replay-ability
(I’m assuming 2D platformers only, and not literally any Super Mario game with 2D graphics.)
Super Mario World is my top pick. Yoshi’s Island is a close second for me, if we’re counting it. Other top tier contenders are Super Mario Bros. 3, New Super Mario Bros. U, and Super Mario Bros. Wonder.
I would have to say Super Mario World personally. Though Mario Maker 1 & 2 comes pretty close! (From a concept perspective, if you want official, SMB3 would be my second pick)
SMB original - the one that kicked off the series - yes all the others were fun and introduced us to lots of new things however, thinking back wasn’t this most enjoyable? Finding those hidden secrets when playing SMB for the first time?

Also yes you're right, Yoshi's Island is the best.
Modern era: Wonder

everyone says Mario world and It's close but I had a better time with Mario 3
Not only the best Mario, but best platformer of all time.
Because besides Mario Land 1 it's the only one I actually finished.
In the SNES era and after, I always got bored with Mario games.

Greetings from Spain, Huge Fan!
It's really incredible how much they packed into a single NES cartridge back then.

The gameplay is still tight and feels great after all these years. It doesn't matter how many times I play this game, it never feels old.
