My only complaint is that it really needs to be labeled. I recently started an excellent fantasy novel, excited because it was a trilogy, then BAM!!! I don't read fantasy novels for sex scenes like that. That's what penthouse letters are for - ThreadSky

Yeah I got into it for a bit and kind of fell back out of it, and it can definitely be a bit of a struggle to work around if you’re not super into a lot of sexytime.

(Which to be clear I absolutely adore smut, but if it’s not what I’m looking for in the moment, it’s not what I’m looking for)

I kind of think there should be a "Without the smut, this would be YA" category for series like Forth Wing or ACOTAR, because there's obviously a huge demand for that sort of book, and it would make it easier to sort through books both for the people who like that genre and the people who don't.

"YA" is another label that's often too vague and used too indiscriminately to be useful. The age group a book is aimed at and its genre should be two different axes that can intersect in a variety of different ways (YA fantasy, YA comedy, YA dystopian fiction, adult fantasy, adult comedy... etc).

Agreed, especially as a parent of a preteen reading well above grade level. Its a lot of work to see what content is in a book, and I (really) appreciate the authors who put content labels in their book listings.

I've also read a few books because the warnings sounded interesting, so... Win\win?

That is the one that caught me. I had no idea what I was getting into. All of sudden it was WAY outside my comfort zone.

Yes, once I got past the "you could die at any moment, and your Mom won't lift a finger to save you" stuff, and the gratuitous sex, there's a good story there. I may read the 2nd book because the cliff-hanger ending was very intriguing. I'll continue to skim through the tediously overwrought bits.

I was already having trouble with the dialogue.. was starting to feel like Gilmore Girls with dragons.. and then the sex.

Still, I got about ten more pages in than I did with the first book of the Wheel of Time, so I think I gave it a chance.
