Companies as big as Microsoft don't die. They break apart, change their names, become something just different enough that people don't remember what they used to be. Wouldn't be shocked if Microsoft and Google go the way of the Bell telephone monopolies: still there if you know where to look.
Microsoft is literally too big to fail. They're a major supplier to dozens of nation state governments, most notably the USA, as well as almost all the largest corporations in the world. They'll be propped up by any means necessary
Who will make sure settings, control panel, registry, etc. menus have 17 different interfaces and design styles without developers? Microsoft can’t make the worst operating system imaginable without developers. Who is going to add a link to Candy Crush to the start menu?

Layoffs of around this size are routine at MS, they come around every few years.
MS got hit hard in court for using full-time contractors who were effectively employees, they're still going to work around the rules wherever they can but there's a closer eye on them than other corps
Yeah, this is the case with my employer. I'm always frustrated that the now regular stories in our local media about how the company is "shrinking its local footprint" never mention that that footprint is absolutely exploding overseas.
