The disparity btwn what’s actually happening in Los Angeles and the way it’s being mischaracterized is one of the biggest stress tests of modern media in recent memory. Botted socials, AI, old clips, declining literacy—it’s like seeing a broken emergency response system hit by a storm.

We all knew Henry, the Mailman by name. When he retired, we put thank you posters up all over the neighborhood. We cherish the kids and hold a dog costume parade in one of the parks every Halloween. Cities are often a conglomeration of neighborhoods like this.

I’ve high grade felt this. Every time I told someone I lived in SF, they’d ask how it was living in such a dangerous place. Every time they visited, they were shocked at how beautiful and safe the city really is.

I’ve stopped arguing with people about it tho. If they believe the news, it’s on them

I hear and try to correct this misinformation even from others who grew up in SF. The city is fine. We walk and ride bikes everywhere and enjoy occasional nightlife. My kids have walked or taken MUNI to school starting in elementary. Makes me laugh when peninulaites say how scary it is.
