We spend so much time talking about all the other things & magical 🦄s mostly as a psychological defense mechanism to avoid talking about this horrifying fact. Harris was qualified & ran a good campaign, & all the pearl-clutching now is silly. Dems did what they needed to do. We, the voters, failed.

The #1 reason the US has an authoritarian president is because 49.9% of Americans chose to vote for the authoritarian.

They explicitly pulled back from messaging that was resonating with voters to instead show off a bunch of Republicans that didn't like Trump.
It was a TERRIBLE campaign.
I see what they are saying, but also no. This sloppy language misleads people about Trump’s popularity. There are 340M+ Americans…and 74M voted for Trump. That’s 22% of Americans. (Roughly 30% of eligible voters.)
This is what decades of abandonment from the former Blue Wall has done.
Proto MAGA knew this and knew what to do:

I'm convinced the reasons they don't have to do with:
1. Sun
2. Decades of anti-'rust belt' and 'flyover country' bias in the national psyche.
We're stupid.
The choice was absolutely stark and anybody who stayed home because “Gaza” or “she may be a bitch to work for” or whatever absolutely meaningless* reason put the rest of us in the barrel and pushed us over the falls. That’s the analysis.
*Are the Palestinians better off with TFG???
The MAGA voters
The third party voters
The protesting non-voting voters
The non-voting voters, (but I have zero faith in this last group. They can be ignored if they're over 30)
