Yes! With extra emphasis on "Enjoy the rest of your life". I spent entirely too much time in WORKHORSE MODE in my stable, boring job with good healthcare & benefits because of my fear of losing said job & know from the burnout that I'd have been better served by enjoying life sooner.

Going from a corporate IT Job that expected me to always be available and work 50 hours a week, to a government IT job that only expects extra availability in the case of an emergency, has done wonders for my mental health. Benefits and work life balance more than cover the slightly lower pay.

Get a hobby or two. Explore your region. Eat out at restaurants serving dishes you've never eaten before. Spend time with friends and/or family. Don't waste your life at a job. It's just work.

I tried doing something I was emotionally invested in as a job. All it did was burn me out to the point of nihilism. I'm doing 100x more for myself and my community now that my job is boring. Separating the source of my survival from the source of my passion was the best thing I could've done.

I don't personally mind evenings or weekend. It's the 40hrs part that I won't go over. (I actually prefer evenings and working on Saturdays, but that's not available in my current job.) If you want me for more than 40 hrs, it better not be mandatory or frequent and there better be overtime pay.

Has worked for me for nearly 38 years. Brother is a family practice physician, still working 70-80 hour weeks at almost age 60. No time for himself, and it's clearly affected his personality - we're not nearly as close as we used to be. 😔

Thoroughly agree. Just log off, don't work long hours. I will never again do unpaid work beyond my contracted hours - if I do it, I take the time back. Employers can be pretty ruthless and dispense with you, despite your loyal dedication.

Great advice! I always thought I couldn't change the world if I wasn't working at some wacky startup, building new and different things. But it turns out that I can make a better future by building psychologically safe teams and helping team members grow. And that is totally practical in 40 hours!
