As someone who used to do ceremonial marches I can tell you it would be very hard to march in step without a base drum in the band. The soldiers honour was sacrificed to 'catchy tunes'.

My comment at the time was before more details had come to light about it being their own kind of protest. At the time I only had suspicions, as did many many others. 20/20 hindsight is a wonderful thing.

I don't think so. Someone on here, ex-military, said that for trained soldiers it's actually much harder for them to march out of sync in this way than to do what they're trained to do. Which is why I think it was a deliberate snub.
