Do politicians with immigrant backgrounds – our best proxy for racial minorities in Sweden – experience more violence than others? And does violence drive them out of political office? We make use of 3 waves of survey data on Swedish local level politicians (N=23,000).

Sweden is a good case for studying these questions. Today, 20%+ of the Swedish population is foreign born and 1/3 of Swedish residents have at least 1 parent who is foreign born. And, about 25-30% of Swedish politicians experience some form of violence each year.

Most commonly, they receive intimidating or abusive online messages. Prior research shows how this damages individuals’ political ambitions, participation in debate, and public visibility - making it crucial to investigate how violence affects different groups of representatives.

Across every form of violence examined, politicians with immigrant backgrounds report experiencing signiﬁcantly more physical and psychological violence than their counterparts.

This applies to both women and men, and to both politicians who are themselves born in another country and to those whose parents immigrated to Sweden.

This violence is not without consequence. It disproportionately pushes immigrant background politicians out of politics.
