The big takeaway here is that Reuters won this case against the AI company on grounds they violated fair use—the judge found the AI company was guilty because, in using copyrighted works to generate its output, it “meant to compete... by developing a market substitute.” Huge.

We got a message from the university to remove any use of the "DEI", "diversity", "equity", or "inclusion" from all public-facing documents. They said that even "biodiversity" is being flagged by the federal government. We live in the dumbest timeline.

We have been censored in the US for our research on LGBTQ+ sexual violence. My co-authors and I are extremely concerned about research and activism being censored and the speed with which organisations have acquiesced to transphobic, homophobic and misogynist demands.

🚨BREAKING. From a program officer at the National Science Foundation, a list of keywords that can cause a grant to be pulled. I will be sharing screenshots of these keywords along with a decision tree. Please share widely. This is a crisis for academic freedom & science.

In learning cultures that are mortally afraid of 'being wrong', a correction can feel like an intensely personal attack.

The elevators in my apartment have screens that show the news, but rather than show major world news and finance, it's a sea of gangland murder, domestic violence, a billionaire said something stupid, terrorism, and teen crime stories, which just sets the mood for leaving your home that day.

"...some of the precocious authors had published what he calls “sometimes nonsensical papers” that included dozens or even 100 citations to their own paper". #academicchatter https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-024-04006-9

Need to look further into the operationalisation of the terms, but interesting stats that are often ignored/obfuscated,

If I had to capture the essence of “rightwing populism” I think I would cite the time in 1774 Virginia slaveowner Richard Henry Lee wanted to protest new taxes levied by the British so he forced his slaves to protest the tax hike on his behalf with banners denouncing the taxes as "chains of slavery"

“Practices around academic publishing are part of a wider system of precarious and exploitative labour relations which enable and conceal sexual violence and other forms of abuse...” Our FLS editorial on publishing, precarity and sexual violence. link.springer.com/article/10.1...

Whowouldathunk that increasingly vitriolic rhetoric accusing LGBTIQ+ community of being 'groomers' would lead to violence against said community for being 'pedos'? So here we are again. The return of organised gay bashings in Sydney during 2024.

Squid Game is a dystopian survival thriller horror that criticises the excesses of class inequality and the callousness of late stage capitalist entertainment ... which is why the McDonald's partnership is both so icky and apt.

NYU Campus Security and Administration is totally out of control. On Wednesday - I filmed a peaceful protest in Bobst library for two hours. Yesterday at 2pm while at home, I received an email explaining that I’ve been designated “persona non grata” and banned from several buildings on campus.

it's SO great to see a documentary about this topic. these are much easier to share with people than academic articles about the topic—I wrote about this way back in 2020, talking about how sexuality material was the canary in the coal mine for libraries journals.ala.org/index.php/ji...

I especially enjoyed the opportunity in this conversation with David Higgins to speak to what Speculative Whiteness: Science Fiction and the Alt-Right means for fan studies and science fiction studies.

Anderson's lack of critical thinking about AI tutors has me wondering whether this is an advert. In the USA, does the media have guidelines for advertisements parading as 'news'?

Born in Australia. Of course, that's the top comment.

I am fortunate to have recently published my first journal article entitled Rape, law and stories of trauma: representations of sexual violence in The Australian Women’s Weekly, 1970–82 with the wonderful team at History Australia. doi.org/10.1080/1449...

Well, that was not on my bingo card for 2024 but I guess in a Trumpian America, I should expect more of this...

🦘🎓 GenAI manifesto for teaching & learning. Something to consider... The manifesto recognises GenAI is not ideologically or culturally neutral, which is not something that is widely recognised in Australian academia (even among humanities and social science academics!)

Israel shifted from using the excuse of 'mistakenly' killing aid workers to now explicitly admitting to targeting aid workers, but justifying it by accusing them of being terrorists. But Australian media does not mention Israeli officials announcing their intention to weaponise starvation.

Wow

While oral examinations are valuable to ensure students graduate with some capacity to verbally express themselves, oral exams privilege students with a facility for speaking and the language of examination + they work better for memory recall than higher order thinking that takes time. 🦘🎓

I have admired Nan Goldin's work before. Glad to see her take this stand against genocide at the opening of her retrospective exhibition in Berlin.
