Is there any evidence that farmers paying inheritance tax will have a negative impact on the amount of food grown? My assumption is that land will still be farmed, albeit potentially by somebody else if the original owner has sell up to pay inheritance tax. - ThreadSky

Concerns include that more land will be bought up at inflated prices and taken out of food production into rewilding or habitat banking for ESG, BNG and carbon schemes; investment managers have already been targeting farmland and farmer purchases of land dropped 10% last year.

You'd think. There was a very useful thread from @tommlancaster.bsky.social on this; higher levels of APR relief secured for land kept in sustainable farming or let out for longer-term, more secure tenancies - and the gov could do it.

A suggestion is exemption from inheritance tax if signed up to an environmental scheme with proven public benefit, which after a specified period of time may transfer to capital gains tax if land is sold. Food security is a contentious issue if it ignores the reality that land is only an element.

Those people arguing for a dietary shift will have very different ideas of how much and which quality of land is required for food security (imports will remain a necessity), which will be contested by those who see no input upland pasture as a viable food production system.

Apart from those upland no input pasture people (who likely have valley lowland with inputs, or use bought in foodstuff produced with inputs) any discussion of food security without including energy, nitrogen, phosphate, potassium sources, machinery, and the multitude of other industrial inputs,
