Some 20 yrs ago a professor friend spoke honestly about dealing with poorly prepared incoming students. "I should fail most of them, but if I did I'd be fired. The admin sees my job as bringing them up to our school's standards in the space of one semester."

And seriously, I do think we need to mock the intelligence of people who defend use of AI in such contexts, and shame them for cultivating a reliance on it rather than engaging actively in their education. There’s nothing intelligent about poor use of bug-riddled ML algorithms anyway.

Disturbingly, at the high school level, I am finding interacting with some students, particularly ones who have been relying on this going back to middle school, to be like interacting with older people with mild dementia--loss of basic short and long term memory.

They have probably learned to mirror the way an LLM functions, so they probably have greatly depreciated short term memory, maybe even atrophied. They don't use it and probably it gets in the way when consuming LLM content.

It’s similar to bans on using Wikipedia as a source. Wikipedia is great - as a starting point! It should never be the finish line. They put the sources on the bottom of each entry for a reason, folks! Read them!

You give them time to research and then they write the paper in class, in controlled conditions, with a pen and paper.

That way, they can either use AI and rote learning which is boring and hard work, or actively engage in research, hone skills, reach an understanding and actually learn something.

I agree with you, and that would be nice, but it's sadly not really an option. During my graduate studies, I was barred from failing a student even after I caught them blatantly plagiarizing their work. The reason? To avoid lawsuits.

And this was a decade ago.
