I've worked several elections as a poll worker & getting away with cheating in an election are virtually nil, due to all the checks and double checks. The only goal of the GOP here is to hinder & restrict voters who would more likely vote Democrat. It's just a power play at democracy's expense...

If the SAVE Act gets through the Senate and you are a married woman who took your husband’s last name you will have to re-register. As I understand it you will be required to have a passport or a certified copy of your birth certificate. This is one more attempt at voter suppression.

In Austria you need 2 register as soon as you move 2 a certain address. You register with ALL your documents - birth, marriage cert., passport, etc. The reg. doc is your voting doc. Priest don't count. If you want to vote outside your residency you need a passport. We vote on Sundays. Always.

In Australia you do need to identify yourself to enrol to vote, and 98% of eligible voters are enrolled. But on election day, very few of us carry identification. Ppl whose surnames are difficult to spell might bring ID to help the polling official find their name.

It's easier for us because pretty much every eligible voter has a health card. In the States, there are a lot of people without acceptable ID.

But we do have an excellent system - voting is easy and secure.

Canada doesn't actually require ID, although ID makes it very easy. If you dont have ID, a person who knows you, and is assigned to the same poll, can attest to your identity. The philosophy is that the biggest violation would be disenfranchisement.

It happened to me once in Ontario. I was turned away for not having a drivers licence. When I contacted my local MP he was outraged. He went to the polling station and set them straight and he even offered to drive me back to vote. I couldn’t believe how hard he fought for a single voter.

For those unfamiliar with Slogan Boy Poilievre's 'Fair Elections Act', reducing the number of 'valid' ID methods was, arguably, his way of attempting to suppress the vote.

So, if you're concerned about that, one more reason to NOT vote for Poilievre.

We Australians don't have to show any form of ID. We turn up, state our full name and address, get marked off, receive our ballot paper, vote, then head outside for our democracy sausage.
