AI is a huge societal challenge going forward. I have no idea how the Ministry will fit into the structure of the government but it doesnβt seem outlandish to have a Cabinet minister for AI.
I am surprised by people's reaction. I was thinking it would be to curb the misuse of AI. I may be wrong but AI needs some very strong legislation and it currently has none.. I hope that is what this will be about.
I don't know why "Just be patient" seems to the Liberal ethos these days but it stinks.
We can't look at the states and say "Wow, the writing was on the walls, guys!" but then dismiss people here in Canada pointing out red flags. Doing so will make fools out of us, too.
The position of Minister of Labour was discontinued in 2024 & the Labour file was the responsibility of the Minister of Jobs and Families. Under the new Cabinet, that Minister is The Honourable Patty Hajdu who I am sure will work very well and closely with the SoS The Honourable John Zerucelli
Correction, the position of Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Labour was abolished in March of 2025. Since then Labour now falls under Minister of Jobs and Families portfolio.
When Carney announced his campaign platform, it explicitly mentioned leveraging AI to find redundancies in the public service. I posted something like "Whoa, that's just DOGE by any other name!" and I got blocked by 50 people for being 'paranoid' and 'dramatic.'
I don't think we'll be in same level of unhinged fervor like Musk, but it certainly isn't a good development. It's a precedent you don't like to see established.
Iβm flashing back to when Rob and Doug Ford ordered a massive audit of Toronto to find the missing billions in Torontoβs budget. The audit found about enough to cover the cost of the audit. Or when Mike Harris promised billions in savings with amalgamation. Government runs capital L lean.
I didn't have a problem with that department in theory( besides the stupid name and who was running it). As someone who worked in government I had plenty of exposure to the waste/mismanagement. My problem with doge was the implementation and the viciousness of the cuts. Treat people with dignity.
Agree with you massive red flag. It sounds like: jobs? We donβt need no stinkin jobs where weβre going! The irony that he was elected (by some) to save Cdn jobs from the trade warβ¦
I didn't think Liberal hacks had much of a presence yet on bluesky... thankfully. I really wouldn't want to meet anyone who would eat up this AI shit just because it's coming from their party. Blech.
And the dud appointed to the AI portfolio is a party appointee with no ties to the seat he was gifted, who was fired from the CBC after selling Carney art.
All his policies leaned on private companies to fill in for fixing issues. Aside from not being labeled as a Conservative Party, they are just a couple steps beside it. Itβs depressing that this was the best reasonable option for the election results. Doubt it goes well but hope Iβm wrong.
What the fuck... this guy is even worse than I was thinking he would be... so have they already decided that the copyright of Canadian creators doesn't matter? But only for big corps ofc
No fan of Evan but you left out 'and Digital Innovation'. I do not want AI stealing creatives' work and yet we are in the midst of an ongoing technology advance. Best that our gov't embrace these changes. I would like to see Labour as full post, but will wait to see how Mr. Carney sets to his work.

And I'm not willing to just "wait and see" with issues as important as labour rights and copyright law.
There's a Minister of JOBS (and Families) and a SoS of Labour. They're interchangeable words.
And look at us now!
