from what i understand these kinda just mesh in with the existing populations of cactus and mourning doves instead of competing with them directly. It's been interesting to learn about since I moved to the desert.

They're similar but two different species! Mourning doves have little spots on their back and no collar, Eurasian collared doves have no spots and a little black half collar on their neck. This site is a good comparison: https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Eurasian_Collared-Dove/species-compare/

Yup and their calls are completely different. In my area, there seems to be an even distribution of them all calling out sometimes one after another. Sometimes I'm not sure who's calling to whom.

Also true! I have some of both living in my neighborhood, and they're hard for me to tell apart at a distance because my eyesight is crap, but I can usually tell which one it is once they start calling!
