Gonna be real, I first read him saying it was $20 a day. And now I saw it was $20 an hour. That is utterly insane. How can anyone believe we pay prisoners the LA min wage?
Compelling labor from someone for functionally free, regardless of why they were there in the first place, kinda is
The rationale in the first place kinda falls away because the perverse incentive of a slavery system means that system goes out of its way to *create* criminals to fulfill that labor
That was simply one example. Obviously there are imprisoned people who are capable of rehabilitation who are not murderers. I honestly just took it as more of a solidarity with minimum wage workers who haven't committed crimes.
We might be thinking of different measures, I absolutely support minimum wage workers and they still deserve a lot more than they get. There was a ballot measure that banned involuntary servitude as criminal punishment, which sadly failed. 1/2
I may be an outsider for this, but I don't think murderers should be enslaved either. Inherent inhumanity of slavery aside, If you complete a long sentence (like one for a violent crime) and rejoin the outside world without 20 years of income, you're screwed and will probably end up back in prison.
Ok so I may be an outsider as well? The term slavery is pretty strong for this situation, and it seems like a knee jerk reaction for a lot of people. If you break the law and wrong society, you're not a slave if you are productive while proving to society that you're rehabilitated.
The larger problem lies with the ability to get housing and a decent paying job in general in this country. Anyone who has served their time should be able to get a (maybe minimum wage) job and an apartment.
No this is a pretty common opinion in the U.S., it's a cruel country. I don't really care about the specific justification for it though, involuntary servitude isn't justifiable to me in any circumstance.
And yes, no one should be forced to work without pay (slavery.) Personally I'd prefer if the prison system was purposed for rehabilitation, and I include the perpetrators of violent crimes.

(also you're on those GOOD drugs if you think they're making $20 an hour)
I’m sorry you can’t handle sane people don’t support slavery like you do.
