@dailydael.bsky.social what's your favorite musical? And, if the answer is something that's only ever been a movie, what's your favorite stage musical?

Company is my favorite, though I think part of it was the incredible performances of Raul Esparza and Heather Laws, plus the really cool idea to have the cast playing instrumental parts on stage (folding it into the theme in 'What Would We Do Without You') from the 2007 revival.
Since Rock & Rule and Streets of Fire technically aren't musicals, I would have to say Something Funny Happened on the Way to the Forum, out of nostalgia (I was in it in high school). I also dig Jesus Christ Superstar but technically that's opera.
True. I guess I was making a distinction between the Disney kind of musicals, where they have speaking lines but occasionally break out into song, and opera, where all dialogue is in song form. There are no real spoken lines in JCS, everything's sung.
Dear Evan Hansen. I empathized with the characters so much I began sobbing, nose running, trying to remain silent in the while seated next to coworker while on a business trip. It took me 5+ years to finally be able to listen to the soundtrack without breaking down and begin to figure out why.
It's actually Caroline, or Change but I think that's a bit of an acquired taste and also I apparently underestimated how much of a deep cut my joke was anyway so might as well go for broke.
I'm not much of a musical person but mine would probably be Something Rotten one of my highschool roommates was obsessed with musicals and he introduced me to that one and I fell in love lol
I have a lot of affection for Oklahoma, Hairspray, Grease..I'm doing my best to watch more classic musicals. My wife keeps recommending Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, so that one is gonna be next I think.
Can't pick a favorite. Too many good ones. Wicked, Hamilton, Les Mis, Phantom...
Favorite stage moment is the Phantom of the Opera opening. When they rip the canvas away, the explosion, the chandelier starts to rise, and the overture kicks in. Tearing up again thinking of seeing it that first time.
Ha! @jamesintrocaso.bsky.social and I have talked about this so I already know your taste is WRONG when I say my favourite is probably Les Mis. Other front runners would be like Waitress, Joseph, Hairspray. Wherefore?
For me the second act kind of lets it down by trying to be too many things and not really doing any one of them as well as it could have. But if we were ranking musicals on their first act, it'd be up there!
Interesting take! I personally don't have the same problem, I think the themes of the second act all cohere rather beautifully by the end, but to each their own of course

Fixed it for you! Don’t worry, I gotchu lol
Hadestown is an amazing spectacle.
Hamilton has jams.
Come From Away and In the Heights are also amazing.
Campy fun, and tied to so many of the best memories of my life.

For one that hasn't been a movie, I'll say Cats.
"But--"
I said what I said. ;)
Les Mis is amazing!
