This ruling is unsurprising. It says that performing statistical analysis on text and creating databases of that statistical analysis is not copyright infringement. Separate that from AI, and you can clearly see why. Everything from search engines to literary concordances would be affected.

I once ran a CthulhuTech one-shot where the PCs had to sabotage a facility. As soon as they planted the bomb, I put a (physical!) chronometer in the center of the table, set to count down 1 hour of real time before the bomb went off. The players loved it! 10/10, would use that gimmick again.

Hypothesis: The Flagellant wing of the OSR experienced the poor layout, opaque text, and often nigh-unintelligible rules of 1970s RPG manuals, felt they found profound truth through their struggle, and now deliberately create illuminated manuscripts that are senselessly difficult to parse or use.
