This is going to be interesting. It's true that NIH funding has contributed greatly to the development of new therapies, but it's also kind-of a scam. The drug companies can patent what they develop through these grants, and charge whatever they like for the drug. We've already paid through taxation

No, this not true. NIH funding goes into bench (preclinical)research, but even more funding supports clinical trials through the cooperative groups, such as the Children's Oncology Group. The COGs research helped childhood leukemia to be a treatable disease, not a death sentence.

There is no healthcare market in the Adam Smith conception of markets. Companies contract with insurance companies who contract with pharmacy benefit managers to decide what drugs you or I (the customer) can take. The customer has minimal input & the companies that do have little incentive to save.

“Was contributed to” means NIH gave a grant to an investigator/s and they got additional grants/funding for their research project elsewhere. Often it is a combination of public and private grants—so from the NIH, their academic institution and pharma and biotech companies.

The typical pathway is the universities develop the initial drug discovery and creates a startup company, a startup company funded via venture dollars does further develop of the drug and maybe runs Phase I clinical trials, and the Pharma co runs the remainder of the expensive clinical trials.
