I have no special expertise but a guess as to using a horn versus a light would be a visual signal requires that someone be paying attention at all times, while a horn will alert people no matter what.

Regarding the use of trumpets vs. light for signaling:

It is preferable to use trumpets whenever possible because trumpets are the most awesome thing, whereas to use of lights would be much less awesome. 🎺🎺🎺
