I don't think this has anything to do with industry consolidation (which has caused real problems!) but with competition from big box stores on one end and with dollar stores on the other end blowing up the traditional grocery store market https://bsky.app/profile/calmicc.bsky.social/post/3lex6xwd5v223

I feel like consolidation in the grocery store space has also led to a lot more places were access to groceries is not nearly as easy as it once was?

The chain grocery feels like a stickup by comparison.
They discriminate in favor of people with cars, pantries, and working capital to stock up on groceries. They don’t want small ticket buyers.
I used to e-bike past Costco and pick up ~4 items a couple times per week to fit in my pannier. Very rare.
great system!
GREAT for meats and such...not so good for produce.
Honestly, even Target's store brands have gotten significantly better. Ninety-nine cents for a box of pasta ain't bad.
Though for anyone in most cities, imo, ethnic markets should be essential shopping.
Sad but not surprising that there was the survey showing that high/low income people got the most value from Costco and PowerBall. Where else can you spend $1 and get more value than that in return?
Honestly, outside some produce and the finer cheese's TJs is not a bargain on 90% of their products now compared to other chain stores and warehouse-bulk stores.
Not sure when that changed so much.
