Our friends had family members "Put down their forks" during dinner, get up, and leave Nazi Germany in the early 30's. My husband and I use that term now when thinking of leaving the US.
Even better, in 1938, in the aftermath of Kristallnacht, there were Germans who thought that things went too far, and that their fellow citizens will come to their senses.
Luckily we know what to do. Worryingly, I'm not sure Americans will have the guts to do it. Yet, the hydra is so big that we need more Luigis. K*** them all.
And there were Germans like us who worried and felt helpless to stop it. Sure there were Germans who celebrated that behavior. Then there were the ones who knew it was wrong and were powerless. Are we powerless? I think we are. I feel powerless.
Recently finished In the Garden of Beasts by Erik Larson. The similarities between 1933/34 and now are striking especially the laughing at Trump and his foolishness and lies. He’s dangerous and has lots of evil people around him to do what he wants done and weakness in those who could stop him.

The Warsaw Ghetto was built to "protect" the Jews.
