I love when fog/clouds obscure the valleys, peaks like Islands in the mist. Reminds me of camping in West Virginia as a kid. Very beautiful, thank you for sparking some nostalgia.
My parents lived in Czechoslovakia and survived both Hitler’s Third Reich and the Russian Communists. Hitler’s headquarters was in Prague. It’s why much original architecture still survives. My father fought in the Czech Resistance Army. After WWII ended, the country was briefly democratic. 1/2
In addition to a mountain retreat in Obersalzberg in Bavaria, known as “Eagle’s Nest, Hitler also had a headquarters in Peschek Palace which was built by a Jewish financier in Prague, and yes, the Gestapo moved into the building interrogating those in the Resistance. https://english.radio.cz/petscheks-palace-once-headquarters-nazi-secret-police-8575365
2/2 In 1948 the Russians supported a coup d’etas, making it part of the Soviet Eastern Block. My parents married Dec. 28, 1947. My mother was a US citizen by birth, but my father was born in Bratislava. Her visa came first. She had to sail 3 days after they married. His visa came a year later.
My mom was a Sudeten Czech and was forced labor in Zwickau. She escaped the Russians in Sept 1945 with clothes on her back. She ended up hitching a ride with some Canadian soldiers, got a job in the officers club in Nuremberg where she met my dad. Her 17 yr old sister was Kidnapped by Russians
My parents said too often the Russians were more cruel than the German Gestapo. Fascinating stories of our parents. I wish I asked more but my Dad did not want to talk about it. Instead he became a functioning alcoholic. Rachel Maddow’s podcast Ultra speaks about the Nuremberg trials. Fascinating!
My dad went to the Nuremberg trials. My mom said the same thing about the Russians. She was from a small farming community near the German border and said they gang raped females from 8-80. She said they hid in haystacks every night. She was not a fan of Russians.
FYI - The name was inspired by the Swiss artists Adrian Zingg and Anton Graff, who were reminded of their homeland by the geography of northern Bohemia.

I'm in Czech skiing in a few weeks. Really tempted to take my camera and sack the skiing off for a day!
Where are you going skiing?
