we have a great blue that lives part of the year on our lake (as he migrates). Every year he “nestsl” in this super tall tree behind our house. We call him Blue (not very creative)… I love seeing (and hearing) himx
I used to see these beautiful creatures quite often at a tiny lake in Washington state.
They're a lot bigger in person.
They can scare the /+ out of you when they take off flying just feet away when you didn't know it was there..😄
I’ve been lucky enough to get to see these magnificent creatures make those long, smooth, effortless coast fly along the water, just above the surface. Gliding on air.
A prehistoric art form for which we have the Dutch to blame. For a long time Japan would only trade with the Dutch and they would only allow them on one island. The Heron was one of the many birds they brought back to Europe. Apologies. I'm a nerd.
Here’s one from our river. I saw him up a tree on a tiny branch one day but didn’t have my phone - my pics aren’t your standard anyway but you get the idea.
I don’t know how content animals actually are ever and I don’t know anybody that really does. Not a wild animal anyway. A cat sleeping or a dog sleeping that I can say is contentment when they’re in the house on the couch or on your lap. Can’t say about a blue heron. So I’m politely disagreeing!
Gorgeous photo!!! These are one of my favorite birds… my granddaughter tried to rescue an injured juvenile but animal rescue would not come pick it up for several days and it sadly passed away!
Is it weird that I have a favourite heron? I was floating down a canal in Sian Kaan and we startled a Great Blue Heron.
As it flew from the grassy shore we saw an enormous, huge, majestic creature with a wing span like a small airplane. The Great Blue Heron startled us too.
Gorgeous! When we lived in South Florida years ago we had an unscreened pool. For several months a great blue heron visited our yard every single afternoon as the day was ending and walked all the way around the pool like a king surveying his kingdom. It was wonderful to see.

Here’s one near sunset.

Or is that a Night Heron that lives there?
Still… Beautiful birds.
Thinking it might be a human visitor, I opened the door and was face to face with a heron.
I yelped and jumped back, the bird also jumped back, shat a puddle, and flew away.
After the shock wore off. I felt weirdly blessed.

Thanks for the photo.
