His work has gotten progressively worse as he's bought into his own bullshit. Even what he's managed that's not total shit, like Race, is somehow good despite him since he thinks the play says the opposite of what he does. My wife saw the Glengarry revival a few months ago and said it hits weird now
So, there’s a part of me that kind of always suspected Mamet was an arsehole so I can’t say I’m surprised at this discovery. I am disappointed. And also angry. I refute that anger/disappointment is a binary state.
I just rewatched Spartan last week and I still love the screenplay and, oh, *Val* but (even though none of this is a revelation) I still feel betrayed.
There's a common dynamic, I think, where talent and/or smarts leads to success which leads to riches which leads to pristine isolation from anything resembling the real world.
