Good thread, and also: San Francisco seems to serve a pretty similar purpose for midwesterners, either intentionally or as an ex post facto justification

Under Barack Obama the illegally present population of the US was very likely shrinking, as older Mexicans returned home. More generally, a pretty high share of irregular immigrants are not trying to establish lives in a new country; they're trying to save up quick to jump social class at home
